Kerr Panel Manufacturing’s support of Orion has been featured by the Office of Small Business Programs. The publication NASA Deep Space Human Exploration Spacecraft Orion: A Case for Small Business highlights small businesses throughout the country that have been integral to mission success.

Kerr Panel Manufacturing’s sales engineer team worked closely with NASA & Lockheed Martin to help design and manufacture the integral aluminum honeycomb panel system as shown in the photos. Kerr Panel Manufacturing prides itself on its commitment to “quality to the core,” a dedication which is evident in the aluminum honeycomb panels manufactured for NASA, Lockheed Martin, & the Orion program, and they look forward to a continuing relationship as mankind gets ever closer to reaching Mars with Orion.

In addition to helping Lockheed Martin design these panels using finite element analysis, Kerr Panel Manufacturing also performed tensile testing on the final aluminum honeycomb panels. These NASA panels, manufactured in Henderson, Colorado, at Kerr Panel Manufacturing’s 12,000 sq. ft. facility and cut on an in-house 10′ x 20′ CNC router, are only some of many aluminum honeycomb panels that have been and will be used for this program. The mock spacecraft will allow engineers and designers to test the systems in real-world situations and test modifications before applying them to the final spacecraft.

NASA Deep Space Human Exploration Spacecraft Orion: A Case for Small Business shows in detail the success stories of small businesses nationwide, including Kerr Panel Manufacturing, that have helped support Lockheed Martin & NASA throughout the Orion project.

The accompanying photograph is a look into the test lab created by Lockheed Martin and NASA using Kerr Panel Manufacturing’s aluminum honeycomb panel technology. Kerr Panel Manufacturing’s aluminum honeycomb panels are shown as the floor.

Aluminum honeycomb core panels are well known by engineers for their myriad uses. Now, more than ever, customers continue to surprise and inspire with new and exciting ways to implement KPM’s aluminum honeycomb panel technology. The reason? Laminated sandwich panels are ideal for jobs that must meet strength and stiffness requirements while remaining flat and lightweight.

For example, KPM has worked with a leading manufacturer of airplane assembly lines. Kerr Panel Manufacturing is known for its capability to produce quality oversized aluminum honeycomb panels. Panels that are perfect for new technology. Kerr Panel Manufacturing provided oversized honeycomb sandwich panels used as an airplane wing mold. The mirrored panels are shipped to the assembly line, and the truck-sized curved panels are sandwiched to create the aircraft wings.

This customer had a single engineer design, plan, and oversee all aspects of the project’s production from start to finish. Contact was made, and KPM helped provide insight into the aluminum honeycomb panel’s capabilities. Next, the Engineer traveled from the East Coast to Denver, Colorado, to view our specialized aluminum panel wing mold customization abilities firsthand. After touring the production facility, the design came to life in the knowledgeable hands of highly trained composite panel staff. This resulted in the confidence to oversee the project’s next phase, which is used to mass produce the panel wing molds for a major airline company, assured and secure in the choice of Kerr Panel Manufacturing.

Unfortunately, we are not allowed at this time to divulge which major airline company the mold is for. What we will say for now is thank you for flying Kerr Panel.

Brrr…. Things are getting colder at Kerr Panel Manufacturing just imagining where some of our aluminum honeycomb panels will go. These navy panels will soon be aboard the USCGC Polar Star, a United States Coast Guard Heavy Icebreaker. The Polar Star performs many exciting missions, including breaking the sea ice. The reason for this? Namely, making a channel for supplying McMurdo Station and Operation Deep Freeze. In addition, this US Coast Guard icebreaker rescues ships that get caught in the changing conditions of the Arctic.

One of the world’s most powerful non-nuclear ships, the Polar Star’s design requires lightweight structural support for its bulkhead panels. Thus, aluminum honeycomb composite panels made by Kerr Panel Manufacturing are perfect for the job. KPM’s structural panels are made of materials designed to be as strong and durable as the ship they reside on. These navy honeycomb panels are laminated with a nylon finish that beautifully complements the rest of the ship’s stylish accommodations. Kerr Panel Manufacturing provides quality to the core with aluminum honeycomb navy panels from the South Pole to the North (and many ports in between).
